For years artist Winston Kellman has beautifully captured the fast disappearing plantation landscapes across the island of Barbados. Lately, he’s turned his eye to the island’s coastlines, recognizing their vulnerability in light of climate change and rising sea levels.
These are two views from the series of paintings of ‘the rock’ of course… at Bathsheba , but I am using it as a symbol for Barbados (as you know we refer to the island as’ the rock’). The idea is to show how precarious we are as an island and how changeable the ‘conditions’ are that affect us because of our size and location. [I believe that] having a stronger ” sense of self ” will lead to greater sustainability in this troubled ‘global world’.- Winston Kellman
